Best places to live in Perth

Perth is said to have ‘something for everyone’.

The thriving Western Australia capital is the fourth-biggest city in the country behind Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane and offers a more relaxed lifestyle along with a cheaper cost of living.

But just where are the best places to live in Perth?

A study by accounting firm PwC Australia ranked Perth’s most liveable areas based on a range of factors including access to amenities, health, housing and crime.

Here are the top-10 areas from the study – and why they are good places to live.

1. Wembley/West Leederville/Glendalough

These three inner-city suburbs lie north-west of Perth’s CBD and surround the large Lake Monger Reserve. They offer a more peaceful suburban atmosphere, while still having convenient access to the city. The area has good schools, plenty of green space and all the amenities to meet everyday needs.

2. North Perth

Just 3 km north of the CBD, this suburb has historical charm mixed with a new, trendy vibe that includes modern developments, cafes, restaurants and shops. It is well-connected, has ample green spaces nearby and offers leisure and entertainment options.

3. Booragoon

A southern suburb about 12 km from the city centre, this peaceful area has a range of housing options, easy access to major roads and a large shopping centre. There are also plenty of parks and reserves, while the beachside suburb of Fremantle is about a 15 minute drive away.

4. South Perth/Kensington

Offering a riverside lifestyle a stone’s throw from the CBD, this area boasts sprawling parks, great views, well-regarded schools and a vibrant restaurant and café scene. It is popular among young professionals, as well as families and retirees.

5. Mount Hawthorn/Leederville

Bordering North Perth to the west, these two suburbs also surround Lake Monger Reserve and provide easy access to all that the city has to offer. There are well-regarded schools and lots of green spaces, along with a lively atmosphere that includes trendy cafes, restaurants, bars, and specialty shops.

6. Bateman

Another southern suburb, Bateman is about 14 km from Perth’s CBD and offers a peaceful suburban lifestyle while still enjoying good transport connections. Basic amenities can be found within Bateman, while neighbouring suburbs provide more options when it comes to shopping, dining and green spaces.

7. Bull Creek

Bordering Bateman in the southern suburbs of Perth, this is another safe, family-friendly suburb. It boasts good schools, a sizeable shopping centre, access to parks and reserves and good transport options including major roads nearby.

8. Leeming

Located about 17 km south of Perth and 13 km east of Fremantle, Leeming is another good choice for families. It has a relaxed vibe, reputable schools and multiple parks and playgrounds scattered throughout. Plenty of amenities can be found locally, as well as good golf courses.

9. Mount Lawley/Inglewood

A trendy area just north of the CBD, these inner-city suburbs have some historical charm, top-notch dining, nightlife and entertainment options and good transport connections, which make them particularly popular for young professionals and couples.
