Pianos are a great musical instrument to play and can be a striking feature in any home.
Many pianos also have some sentimental value to their owners, with some passed down between generations.
However, pianos can also be one of the heaviest and most difficult items to move.
Not only are pianos quite large in size, but some can weigh as much as 550kg.
Even an average baby grand piano can tip the scales at around 320kg.
There is no lifting and carrying that much weight with just a couple of sets of hands.
If you are moving house and need to move a piano, you are going to need plenty of help and the right equipment for the job.
What it takes to move a piano
Moving a piano is no easy task and requires a lot of co-ordination and equipment.
First, you will need the help of multiple people to help with lifting the piano.
You are also going to need a moving dolly, protective items like heavy-duty blankets and bubble wrap, furniture straps, quality tape and a suitable moving vehicle which has a hydraulic lift.
If you have all of this, you might be able to move the piano by yourself.
Prepare the piano for moving by taping the lid, removing any wheels, covering the piano keys and pedals with bubble wrap and securely wrapping the whole piano in heavy-duty blankets.
When it comes time to move, always bend your knees rather than your back when lifting, maneuver the piano onto the moving dolly and let it do most of the work.
Most pianos are very fragile, so need to be handled with extreme care throughout the moving process and need to be well secured in the moving vehicle.
On arrival to your new house, unload the piano first before any other items that you are transporting in your vehicle.
Don’t leave the piano outside for any length of time, because it could be damaged by direct sun, heat or moisture.
