Melbourne has regularly been voted one of the world’s most liveable cities over the years.
The Victorian capital is a vibrant and diverse city with plenty to see and do.
But some suburbs in Melbourne rank higher than others when it comes to livability.
Here are some of the best suburbs to consider moving to in Melbourne.
Northcote
Located just 7km north-east of Melbourne’s CBD, Northcote is accessible and has a distinct community feel, plenty of parks and other amenities. It is also known for its café scene and shopping strips along High Street. It has become an increasingly popular suburb for singles, couples and young families.
Carlton
Just 3 km north of Melbourne’s CBD, Carlton is a lively but also more laid-back area. It is famous for Lygon Street, where you will find plenty of nice Italian food. There are also plenty of gardens and parks, including the very sizeable Princes Park. The University of Melbourne and the Royal Melbourne Hospital are very close-by.
Richmond
A busy area just 3 km east of Melbourne’s CBD, Richmond seemingly has it all. There is easy access to the city, but you don’t need to leave Richmond for much. The suburb has plenty of restaurants, pubs, nightlife, shops and parks. It is also home to the MCG for sport and major events, with other key venues like Rod Laver Arena and AAMI Park also nearby.
St Kilda
When it comes to livability in Melbourne, St Kilda ranks highly. Located 6km south-east of Melbourne’s CBD, it boasts a popular beach and Esplanade. There are plenty of restaurants, cafes, pubs and good nightlife. Green spaces are also within easy reach.
Brighton
It ranks as one of Melbourne’s most expensive suburbs for a reason. Brighton is located on the beach, 11km south-east of Melbourne’s CBD. It is all about lifestyle in Brighton, with a relaxed atmosphere, nice beach and good parks. High-performing schools and easy access to the city via train and tram lines also make it an attractive suburb to live in.
Beaumaris
Another affluent beach-side suburb, Beaumaris is located 20 km south-east of Melbourne’s CBD. Residents enjoy a laid-back waterfront lifestyle with a family-friendly environment. There are great walking and cycling trails and prestigious golf courses nearby, as well as high-quality public and private schools.
Eltham
Somewhat of a hidden gem, Eltham is located 20 km north-east of Melbourne’s CBD. There are green spaces galore, with plenty of beautiful parklands and reserves for spending time outdoors. The city is easily accessed by train, while there are all kinds of local sporting clubs and excellent schools in this suburb, which boasts a strong sense of community.
Caroline Springs
Located 21km west of Melbourne’s CBD, Caroline Springs is known for its family-friendly environment with parks, playgrounds and community centres. It is a more modern suburb with a vibrant town centre. Better affordability than some other Melbourne suburbs also makes Caroline Springs a winner for first-time homebuyers and young families.
Cranbourne
One of the more affordable options for families in the south-east is Cranbourne, which is located 43 km from Melbourne’s CBD. But don’t let that put you off. Cranbourne has a 363 hectare Royal Botanic Gardens, which includes wetlands, woodlands, walking tracks and picnic facilities. There are also plenty of family-oriented amenities around Cranbourne.
Ringwood
A growing, vibrant community, Ringwood is located 25 km east of Melbourne’s CBD. The area is known for top schools, easy access to shopping centres and entertainment options and good parks and dining. It is also more affordable than many inner-city and bayside suburbs, while still being well connected with a train line linking it to the city.
