Creating a checklist is a great way to stay on top of things when you are moving house and ensure you don’t forget any vital tasks.
It can be a good idea to begin writing a checklist as soon as your move is confirmed.
You can then add to it as new things come to mind – all while ticking off items as you complete them.
Some tasks on your checklist should be done right away, but others need to be ticked off closer to moving day.
Therefore, it is smart to break up your checklist into sections related to when the tasks can or should be completed.
This section of your checklist is for tasks which should be completed immediately.
These may include:
- Get quotes from quality removalists and book a company as far in advance as possible
- Arrange home and/or contents insurance for your new property
- Update your details with government agencies, the Electoral office, insurance companies, banks and service providers
- Create an inventory of the furniture, appliances and items you plan to take with you to your new property
- Donate or dispose of household items you no longer need
- Dispose of flammable liquids that are illegal or dangerous for removalists to move, including paint, bleach, aerosols and garden chemicals
- Arrange for school or child care transfers for children
- Organise care for children or pets on moving day
- Arrange repairs or cleaning for your current property before handover
- Source packing supplies, including moving boxes, packing paper, tape and bubble wrap
- Begin packing – starting with items you will be able to live without until after your move
This section of your checklist is for tasks which should be completed about one week before your moving day.
These may include:
- Confirm your final moving details with your removalist
- Organise mail redirection to your new address
- Set aside a small selection of items that you will need easy access to, including some plates and cutlery, towels, sheets, medicine and toiletries
- Use up as much of your perishable food as possible
- Finalise as much of your packing as possible
This section of your checklist is for tasks which should be completed the day before your moving day.
These may include:
- Empty and defrost your fridges and freezers
- Pack a bag of essential items for moving day, including some clothes, snacks, toiletries, phone chargers and any medicine
- Drain your washing machine
- Take note of your utility meter readings
This section of your checklist is for tasks which should be completed on your moving day.
These may include:
- Provide a tour of your home and detailed instructions for your removalists
- Take your essentials bag and any other important things with you
- Make sure your current home is left clean and secure
